Tibet Travel Restrictions Need to Know:

  • Tibet Travel Permit (TTP)
      • Foreigners and Chinese nationals from other provinces are required to obtain a Tibet Travel Permit (TTP) before entering Tibet.
      • The TTP is issued by the Tibet Tourism Bureau (TTB) or a licensed travel agency in Tibet.
      • The permit specifies the places that visitors are permitted to enter, and it frequently includes restrictions on the duration of stay.
  • Chinese Visa
      • International travellers must obtain a China visa, typically an L visa (Tourist China Visa) and a TTP.  If you hold a Singapore, Japan, or Brunei passport, you must apply for a China visa for your Tibet travel permit.
      • If you have another type of China visa, you will need to provide extra certification documents when applying for your Tibet entrance permit.
      • The type of visa required varies based on the objective of the visit (tourism, business, or education).
  • Organized Tour Group Required
      • Travellers are normally required to join an organized group as independent travel is often prohibited in Tibet.
      • The groups must be escorted by the local tour guide throughout the trip to visit the local attractions.
  • Documents and Permits:
    • Travellers must carry their passport, Tibet Travel Permit (TTP), Chinese visa and any other required permits at all times during their stay in Tibet.
  1. Tibet can be reached via mainland China or Nepal
    • Currently, there is only one International flight from Kathmandu to Lhasa that is operated on Monday to travel to Tibet.
    • Besides the Kathmandu to Lhasa flight, international travellers can also enter Tibet via mainland China.
